                       Mourning Becomes Electra

           Eugene O’Neill was the son of an actor whose work meant  that the  family led a difficult life on the road. O’Neill wrote morality plays and experimented with the tragic form.  O’Neill choose Electra because  he felt that her tale had been left incomplete, more generally, as his diary notes indicate, O’Neill understood his exercises in tragedy as an attempt to find a modern analogue to an ancient mode of experience. Thus mourning aims to provide a “modern psychological approximation of the Greek sense of fate” in a time in which the notion of an inescapable and fundamentally non-redemptive determinism is incomprehensible.

        The play “mourning become Electra” divided into three parts like,

1) The Homecoming

2)  The hunted

3)  The haunted

           The word mourning  it means the death of someone or the death of soldier. In this play we can find the name and fame of mannon family. There are many   characters in the play like, Ezra mannon, Christine mannon, lavinia , Orin, peter, hazel,….etc.

         At the beginning of the play we can see the mannon house looks like pyramid. The pyramid it’s grave and other the picture of garden. It’s not green garden it is barren garden. There are many issues created in the play. The old gardener who look’s like a ghostly way. So the play is all about the terror and horror of the story.

                However, we can also defined the Oedipus complex. The Oedipus drama in its many permutations determines the course of the trilogy. Lavinia, for example, yearns to replace Christine as wife to her father and mother to her brother. Christine clings to Orin as that the “ flesh and blood” entirely her own , that would make good on her castration. Brant , in turn is bat a substitute for her precious son,  Orin yearns to re-establish his incestuous bond with his mother, but the war, where he would finally assume the mannon name, forces him from their  pre-Oedipus Electra complex. The Electra complex it means what kind of rivalry the mother and daughter.

                However, also we can defined Orin talk about his mother history. And he says that I will make you happy In your life . after Christine committed suicide,

              After one year passed lavinia look like her mother relation between the wife of Ezra and Orin look like his father and relation between the husband. Here, O’Neill use the technique of similar look and Oedipus complex. Later Orin committed suicide and he wrote one letter he written about the history of mannon family. But Lavinia is criminal in the history. But at last lavinia punishment to herself.

              At the end of play we can defined that death of mannon family house and all family members. Also the connection between the looks of house and end of the play because here at last the death of mannon family and the death of mannon house.
